THE HEADLINES: Five RSS feeds were searched through the Yahoo! Pipes software: World, Opinion, Video, 48 Hours and 60 Minutes. On average, searches conducted using the five RSS feeds returned about half of “today’s” stories that came up on the searches of the CBS website. However, the searches were inconsistent. One day, there were no stories dated “today” on the site search. Another day, the site search yielded about 35 stories from “today” while the feeds only yielded four. Typically, the feeds returned a half to three-quarters more archived stories than “today’s” stories. The CBS site search yielded a very large percentage of archived stories. |
| Other Issues: |
Both the site search and the RSS feeds returned many stories from AP or other non-CBS news outlets. |
Both the site search and the RSS feeds returned many archived stories that went back as far as over a month ago, however, the website search returned more of today's stories than the RSS feed, with the exception of one day when the website had no stories labeled from today. |
Search results for the RSS feeds showed headlines/summaries and occasionally included the reporter of the story. The site search gave the headlines/summaries and the date. |
The RSS feeds were consistent in what they pulled from the website. When 10-12 consecutive searches were run through the feeds, the results remained the same. |
The RSS feeds returned multimedia results, while the basic site search did not. On the CBS Web site, the default option is to search just for stories. One must specifically select "video" from the drop-down menu in order for the results to yield video clips. |
