THE HEADLINES: Four RSS feeds were searched through the Yahoo! Pipes software: International News, Opinion, Breaking News and UK News. On average, a search through the feeds returned about 50 percent of “today’s” stories found on the website search, although on one day the RSS feeds returned no stories. Many of the articles returned by the site search were archived stories, but overall the site search yielded more of “today’s” results than the feed did. The RSS feed search only displayed about half of the stories dated "today" that appeared on the website search. |
| Other Issues: |
All of the stories that came up through the website and the four RSS feed searches were staff written. There appeared to be no stories from outlets such as Reuters or AP. |
Stories coming through the RSS feeds were generally more hard-news stories and more specifically about the search term (i.e. Iraq); the site search returned those stories plus ones that only tangentially mentioned the search term. |
Sometimes the dates posted were inconsistent – a story that came up on the RSS feeds was dated today from the link, but when it came up on the website search it was dated from the previous day. |
The site search and the searches through the RSS feeds both gave archived results, some that went back over a month. |
The website provided a wealth of information (date, time, summary, author) on the articles. Search results for the RSS feeds gave the articles’ headlines /summaries, but other information was only available after clicking through to the full articles. An overview of date, time, author and summary would have been more useful and informative. |
Neither the site search nor the RSS feeds returned any multimedia results. |
