The study used five categories to evaluate the news outlets:

Corrections: Willingness to openly correct mistakes.

Ownership: Openness about corporate ownership.

Staff Policies: Openness about conflicts of interest.

Reporting Policies: Openness about editorial guidelines.

Interactivity: Openness to reader comments and criticism.

Dr. Susan D. Moeller

Susan Moeller, the director of ICMPA, is a professor of media and international affairs at the University of Maryland's Philip Merrill College of Journalism and the School of Public Policy. Moeller is also the the co-director of the Salzburg Academy, in Salzburg, Austria. Author of Compassion Fatigue: How the Media Sell Disease, Famine, War and Death and Shooting War: Photography and the American Experience of Combat, Moeller was formerly the director of the Journalism Program at Brandeis University. more information

Jad Melki

Jad Melki, the research director of ICMPA and a junior faculty member at the Salzburg Academy, is a visiting professor at Towson University and Johns Hopkins University, teaching courses on research methods, media and society, media literacy, and media and war. Melki has been a broadcast and online journalist for over 10 years working with American and Arabic media. He is a Ph.D. candidate at the College of Journalism at UMD. more information

Rafael Lorente
Rafael Lorente is a former Washington correspondent for the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. As a reporter in Washington Lorente covered two presidential elections and U.S. foreign policy, particularly toward Cuba and Latin America. Lorente is currently a doctoral fellow and visiting professor at the University of Maryland's Philip Merrill College of Journalism. more information

Meagan Bond
Meagan Bond is a senior broadcast journalism and government and politics double major at the University of Maryland. She has worked as the associate producer on a documentary film in Costa Rica, conducted research for Frontline documentaries, and is currently interning at MSNBC. more information

Jackie Cutler
Jackie Cutler is a senior broadcast journalism major at the University of Maryland. Last year, she was awarded the RTNDA's Ed Bradley Scholarship. Cutler plans to work as a local news reporter before becoming a network correspondent or producer. She will graduate in May 2007 with a bachelor's degree in broadcast journalism and work at NBC (New York) as a summer fellow. more information

Matthew Johnson
Matthew Johnson is a journalism student at the University of Maryland in his third year, with a minor in international development and a citation in creative writing. His interests include anything relating to humanity, but he loves to analyze media and how they shape society. more information
